Fungal infections cost the NHS an estimated £50 million a year in antifungal drug use and can often delay patients from receiving anticancer and other treatments. Dr Paul Millner at Leeds University, working with Dr Richard Barton from Leeds Teaching Hospitals has developed a biosensor to detect chitin in the blood system. This project will test whether patients known to have fungal infections have chitin levels in their blood, thus proving whether or not chitin is a true biomarker of fungal infections. If so this will enable a rapid near patient test to be developed. |
