Current methods used to identify the rapidly increasing incidence of cardiovascular disease and assess replacement heart valve performance are expensive, time consuming and clinically intensive. Owlmed Ltd, have developed an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) based "microchip" monitoring system which can be implanted onto heart valves to provide accurate, non-invasive, quick, economical assessment of implant performance over time, providing better patient outcomes and significant productivity improvements. The aim of this project is to validate the novel microchip sensor technology in a pre clinical setting. This project will utilise unique cardiac testing facilities and expertise within the Institute of Medical & Biological Engineering through BITECIC Ltd.
